On January 16, 2020, Volk Law attorney Barry K. Baker participated in a two hour joint presentation with Alan Bernstein of HR Savers, Inc.   Barry and Alan gave a presentation on “HR 101” at Eastern Florida State College to business owners and HR professionals.  This presentation was sponsored by the Florida Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Eastern Florida State College (EFSC).  The purpose of the HR 101 presentation was to give participants an overview and general understanding of the elements of an effective human resources function to include hiring, retention, employee engagement, management, and compliance.  Alan’s 27 years of experience as an HR professional combined with Barry’s 22 years of legal experience resulted in an engaging and informative session.  Barry spoke on several subjects including the major state and federal laws applicable to the workplace, employee handbooks, job descriptions, investigation of discrimination complaints, non-exempt vs. exempt employees, and distinguishing between independent contractors and employees.  Barry’s goal was to create an awareness of how the law governs what an employer can and can’t do in its relationship with its employees.   If you missed this presentation, Barry and Alan will be giving another joint presentation in the coming months.  The Florida SBDC at EFSC website is a tremendous resource for entrepreneurs and small businesses.  This website also includes a schedule of upcoming SBDC classes.   Check it out here and stay tuned for future presentations!  https://www.easternflorida.edu/academics/workforcetrainingandcertifications/sbdc/
