On August 6th, attorney Barry K. Baker of VolkLaw attended the Small Business Council meeting at the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce. The event was well-attended, with over 70 participants. The Small Business Council is for employers with less than 50 employees, which includes the majority of businesses in Brevard County and, indeed, nationwide. The presentation by the keynote speakers was on social media and its role in business marketing. The presentation included the social media most utilized by different age populations. For example, Millennials tend to engage in virtual transactions more than any other age group; from attending virtual open houses when deciding on a home purchase to purchasing automobiles online. It was detailed that Millennials expect a heavy online presence for any business so that they can research your company through Facebook with a link to your website for example. Facebook remains the leader in social media usage, with 68% of the estimated 3.2 billion social media users having an account. The presenters also detailed the importance of social media for branding and awareness, and the use of tagging, sharing, and liking content in order to “cross pollinate” your marketing strategy to new people. Another interesting statistic was that 90 percent of all online reviews are made within 15 minutes of the consumer’s experience with your business and the importance of managing and responding to review content that may unfairly disparage your company. The bottom line was that every business needs to establish a “digital footprint” with social media that is targeted to your desired customer and is properly updated, managed, and monitored.
